Manitoba is facing a $1.4 billion cut to health care funding by the federal government over the next ten years. By refusing to sign a new health accord with the provinces, the federal government is abandoning its responsibility to protect quality public health care services for all Manitobans.
Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, National Chief Betty Ann Lavallée, will hold a press conference to discuss the impact that the Federal Court of Appeal decision could have on Métis and non-Status Indians in the case of Daniels vs. Canada. The Federal Court of Appeal is expected to release its decision at approximately 10 a.m., Thursday, April 17, 2014, which could have a major impact on the relationship between the Government of Canada and the more than 600,000 Aboriginal Peoples of Canada who now live off-reserve.
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird (Ottawa West-Nepean, Ont.) will travel to Egypt and Oman from April 17 to 20, 2014. During his trip, he will discuss economic and security issues as well as important regional issues, including the situation in Iran and Syria and the Middle East peace process.
The Canadian Medical Association, in partnership with Maclean's, will host a town hall as part of its national dialogue on end-of-life care. Launched in February, the national dialogue consists of a series of five public town halls across Canada focusing on physician-assisted dying, advance care planning and palliative care. Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Calgary Southwest, Alta.) announced that a state funeral will be held for Jim Flaherty in honour of his years of dedicated service to the Canadian people. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on April 16, at St. James' Cathedral, 65 Church St., (at King), Toronto. Flaherty's family appreciates all the expressions of support and condolences and asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Abilities Centre.
