Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor spoke with Janet Ko, president and co-founder at Menopause Foundation of Canada, about her one-year-old advocacy group which is on a mission to increase awareness of menopause, its impacts on women’s health and society overall, and to improve the way it’s treated in the health care system. “Our goal is to really legitimize menopause as an important issue that requires attention from government, from workplaces, from the medical community and from women themselves,” she said.

Marcel Wieder, president of Aurora Strategy Global, told The Lobby Monitor about his company's growth strategy which led to the hiring of eight new associates – including four former politicians – in the course of one month. “We always look to grow the firm and bring in associates that can add value to helping clients deliver their message,” said Wieder. “Part of our growth strategy is the establishment of this municipal practice group… and the others help supplement us in our activities.”

The numbers are in for the third quarter of 2023 with Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Armatec Survivability, and Rogers Communications Inc. taking the top spots as the most active lobbyists. Saskatchewan Polytechnic led with 59 reports.

In weekly communications reports, Imagine Canada’s Sept. 26 day on the Hill led it to submit the highest number of communications — 40 out of a total of 1,449 — reports during the week of Oct. 16. The organization is represented on the registry by president and CEO Bruce MacDonald and consultant Sonja Tilroe of PAA Advisors. The advocacy week focused on a variety of issues pertinent to the charity and non-profit sector, but had a specific focus on the feds’ proposed increase to the tax rate for those who calculate their income taxes using the alternative minimum tax (AMT) calculation.

In this week’s registrations, joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time is Axiom Space Inc., a U.S.-based company with a focus on spaceflight services. Axiom is represented by Bita Razeghi-Cattelan who is working for the company as a strategic consultant. Razeghi-Cattelan will engage government officials to raise awareness and discuss funding opportunities for Canadian astronauts to participate in commercial space missions.

Another company joining the registry for the first time is COBS Bread, represented by Ujwal Ganguly and Scott Munnoch, both of Temple Scott Associates Inc. Ganguly and Munnoch will seek discussions about Bill C-56, Affordable Housing and Groceries Act. COBS Bread is a bakery which originated in Australia in 1980, and has since opened more than 700 bakeries around the world, including 145 across Canada.

Adding another voice to its lobbying team is Petro Plastics Corporation Ltd., which hired Peter Curtis of Pathway Group. Curtis will engage government officials on Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Strategy on Zero Plastic Waste, according to his registry file. Petro Plastics, based in Woodbridge, Ont., produces plastic products and packaging solutions.
