Here’s the news we covered this week:

In this week’s On Queen Street, The Lobby Monitor covered a number of hirings and promotions happening in the consulting industry. Among those was David Herle’s move to Rubicon Strategy where he is now a partner. Other mentions include Carly Ellis of EnterpriseHealth, who has been promoted to vice-president, and Crestview Strategy’s new director of research Elizabeth MacRae.

The Lobby Monitor spoke with Muhammad Ali, vice-president at Crestview Strategy, and George Soule, principal at Syntax Strategic, about which issues will be top of mind for MPs in the final weeks of the parliamentary sitting and their approach to lobbying at this time of year. “There's two ways that I approach this time of the year, or as we all call it, ‘silly season,’” said Ali. “By pressing on issues that [the government] have an impetus to get done quickly … [or by] laying down foundation of what the summer and fall should look like.”

Cancer care advocates discussed the obstacles to accessing clinical trial treatments. “From the Canadian Cancer Society's point of view, this [issue] is important because patients tell us that it's not working right now. Patients don't have the access that they want to have, [and] they can see that we're sending people around the world to take part in treatments that are not available in Canada,” said Andrea Seale, the organization’s CEO.

In this week’s communication reports, a total of 157 communications were submitted to the federal lobbyists’ registry, with the Capilano Students' Union contributing the highest number of reports. The union registered 21 communications, which were submitted under files attached to three in-house representatives: Manpreet Kaur, Manbir Singh, and Karandeep Singh Sanghera. Discussion topics listed on the representatives’ registry files focus on federal funding to improve the financial well-being of post-secondary students.

In this week’s registrations, a number of organizations looking to address various social issues jumped onto the registry.

Jack.org, a charity that provides Canadian youth with education related to mental health, is joining the federal registry for the first time. The organization is represented by its president and CEO Rowena Pinto. The organization will seek federal funding from the Liberals’ proposed youth mental health fund to improve their training programs to help youth become mental health advocates in their communities. The group is also looking to work alongside the federal government to advance federal programs, policies, and initiatives related to mental health.

Also joining the registry for the first time is Construction Industry Rehabilitation Plan Inc. (CIRP). The organization is represented by Bill Tieleman of West Star Communications Corporation. CIRP is looking for federal funding to support the organization’s efforts to assist construction workers struggling with substance abuse, according to Tieleman’s registry file. This includes funding to improve rehabilitation services and to construct a new rehabilitation centre.

The organization provides workers in the construction industry with mental health and addiction services.

In new registrations, Reem Wahab of Kit Public Affairs has registered to represent two organizations: Women in Communications and Technology (WCT) and Actua. Kit Public Affairs’ Kristina Martin is also representing both organizations on the federal registry.
