Here’s the news we covered this week:
The Lobby Monitor spoke to NDP MP Alistair MacGregor and multiple advocates about the importance of MacGregor’s private member’s bill, C-277. The bill, which calls for a national strategy for brain injuries, is now awaiting a study by the House health committee after it passed a second reading vote in the House of Commons on June 12. "If we actually put the tools in place so that we can build more awareness, more prevention, more treatment, and have a truly national approach to it, we are also–by consequence–going to deal with some of these larger societal problems,” said MacGregor. Studies indicate that some of those societal problems with a connection to brain injury include homelessness and substance use.
In this week’s On Queen Street, The Lobby Monitor spoke with Dr. Joss Reimer who became the Canadian Medical Association’s (CMA) new president on May 29. Reimer discussed what her top priorities will be as the face of the organization over the next year. Reimer sought out the role as she wanted “to be part of the solution … to the struggles that physicians have been dealing with for a long time that were exacerbated by the pandemic but certainly were not caused by it,” she said.
The Chicken Farmers of Canada was the most active lobbying organization in May, as it submitted a total of 63 communication reports. Meetings held in May focused on multiple topics including Bill C-282, An Act to amend the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Act (supply management). “First and foremost, we always talk to parliamentarians about their support for Canada's system of supply management. It is the cornerstone of the Canadian chicken sector, as it is the system under which the sector functions,” said Lauren Kennedy, director of public affairs and communications at the organization.
In this week’s communication reports, the Chicken Farmers of Canada were also the most active organization. The high volume of communications submitted to the federal lobbyists’ registry was thanks to a four-day marathon of meetings with parliamentarians between May 27 and May 30. The organization is represented by its executive director Michael Laliberte and some board members. The Chicken Farmers of Canada is a non-profit organization representing poultry farmers across the country, according to Laliberte’s file. The organization is also responsible for regulating the production of chicken under the supply management system.
In this week’s registrations, S. Gumpert Company of Canada Ltd. is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time as it seeks federal funding to refurbish a closed processed egg facility. Frank Massong of Culture Advisory Group Inc. is representing the company on the registry. The S. Gumpert Company, headquartered in Mississauga, Ont., manufactures and sells commercial baking products and ingredients.
Also new to the registry is Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM), which seeks discussions with federal officials about bridging programs for internationally educated nurses. The organization is represented by Maia Lugar of First Lake Solutions. The ARNM is a professional association representing current and former nurses of Manitoba. Additionally, the group represents foreign nurses who have not yet received a nursing license in that province.
In new registrations, Bri-mor Developments has hired Jared Maltais of Wellington Advocacy to represent them on the registry. Maltais is joining his colleague Brad Tennant. Communications will focus on how Bri-mor can support the federal government’s housing construction goals, according to Maltais’ file. Additionally, he will look to discuss models where non-profits and companies can help unlock financing for affordable housing projects.
