Here’s the news we covered this week:

Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault appeared before the House ethics committee on Sept. 19 and told committee members that Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein had informed him that an investigation would not be opened related to his business activities. The employment minister then read an excerpt from the letter he received from the commissioner: “‘On the basis of the information you have provided, and in the absence of any evidence giving me reason to believe you may have been operating or managing GHI in contravention of the act, I consider this matter closed.’”

MPs returned to the Hill this week with an uncertain fall session ahead after the NDP walked away from its supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals earlier this month. The Lobby Monitor spoke with lobbyists, including Crestview Strategy consultant Sam O’Grady and Niipaawi Strategies founder Cam Holmstrom, about how the fall session could play out. “The next eight weeks are probably going to be the most important when it comes to advocacy. Anything that we want to get across the line–anything that folks are looking forward to have discussions about–should probably be started now,” said O’Grady.

The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) was the most active advocacy organization, according to The Lobby Monitor’s review of communication reports held in August. The CSPA’s president and CEO, Catherine Cobden, submitted a total of 18 communication reports. Cobden’s registry file lists 14 discussion topics including federal investment for innovation in the steel sector, regulations related to waste materials, and international trade policy issues. A total of 1,485 communications were held in August, according to the federal lobbyists’ registry.

In our weekly communication reports feature, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) submitted the highest number of reports last week as it focused its lobbying efforts on anti-scab legislation, the Pharmacare Act, and the Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act. Beatrice Bruske, CLC president, filed the organization’s 27 communications which took place between April 2, 2024, and Aug. 27, 2024. A total of 657 communications were submitted overall to the federal lobbyists’ registry during the week of Sept. 9, 2024.

In this week’s registrations, MEDTEQ+ has joined the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time as it seeks federal funding to support the development of medical technology. The organization is represented by Marc Desmarais of NATIONAL Public Relations. MEDTEQ+ is a non-profit organization which supports companies seeking to develop medical technology.

Skeena Resources Limited has also joined the federal registry for the first time to advocate for government support for the Eskay Creek revitalization project. The company is represented by Tim Barber, Nolan Pratt, and Gregory Loerts of Bluesky Strategy Group. Skeena, a mining exploration and development company, is seeking federal support to revitalize the Eskay Creek mine in northwestern British Columbia.

In new registrations, Aecon Group Inc. has returned to the federal registry to engage with government officials about federal infrastructure projects. The company’s president and CEO, Jean-Louis Servranckx, is representing Aecon on the federal registry. Aecon Group is a North American construction and infrastructure development company.

The following are new registry files, registrations and reactivated files posted on the federal lobbyists' registry between Sept. 16, 2024, and Sept. 19, 2024. The information is based on a search of the registry on Sept. 19, at 9:05 a.m. ET.
