Here’s a look back at the news we covered this week:

The effects of last week’s minor cabinet shuffle will be felt by multiple industries lobbying the federal government, according to some consultants. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweaked his cabinet on Aug. 31, swapping the roles of two ministers. Filomena Tassi left the public services and procurement portfolio to take responsibility for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). Tassi swapped places with Helena Jaczek, who now leads public services and procurement.  “[Public Services and Procurement Canada] is a large, important portfolio that impacts many industries. Those who have been lobbying Minister Tassi and her staff for the last year or so will now need to re-establish relationships with new staff and a new minister,” said Kristina Martin, president and founder of Kit Public Relations.

Former Nova Scotia finance minister Labi Kousoulis has joined Impact Public Affairs as a strategic adviser. He told The Lobby Monitor that he will advise clients on working with governments, as well as other public affairs strategies. “Most of my work [as finance minister] revolved around making sure that heavily-impacted industries during COVID — the restaurant industry, service industry, tourism industry — were getting support from the provincial government, to ensure that we could help bring them through COVID,” he said. “We were doing a lot of Zoom meetings, telephone calls, and leaning on various organizations and association stakeholders to communicate to their members.”

Nukik Corporation submitted 12 of the 121 communication reports posted to the registry between Aug. 29 and Sept. 4. The organization is represented on the registry by Sussex Strategy Group consultants Dan Lovell and Ingrid Ravary-Konopka. Nukik’s communications all took place between Aug. 28 and Sept. 1. Nukik communicated with Celine Yegani, senior special adviser to Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland; Michael Burton, chief of staff to Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller; and unaffiliated Senator Patti Laboucane-Benson. Nukik is currently in the development phase of the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link, a 1,200-kilometre project that will connect Nunavut’s Kivalliq region with the electrical grid in Gillam, Man.

In new registrations, LNG Newfoundland and Labrador (LNG-NL) has hired Pilot Communications consultant Erin Curran, who registered on Aug. 15, to represent it in discussions with the Canada—Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board. According to its registry file, LNG-NL hired Curran to arrange meetings to discuss liquified natural gas (LNG) production, the company’s “commitment to environmental stewardship,” and international relations.

Also new to the registry is EverGen Infrastructure Corp., which started its first file on Sept. 1 with consultant Dan Lovell of Sussex Strategy Group. The Vancouver, B.C.-based renewable natural gas company operates waste-to-energy projects in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. According to its registry file, EverGen is seeking repayable and non-repayable federal contributions towards the implementation of clean technologies. Lovell plans to communicate with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Privy Council Office, Finance, Agriculture, Environment, Natural Resources, and Innovation, as well as with MPs and senators.

Returning to the registry after 17 years is Goodyear Canada, which has hired Crestview Strategy consultant Muhammad Ali to represent it in discussions with the PMO, Finance, Global Affairs, and Innovation, as well as with MPs. Ali registered on Sept. 2. The tire manufacturing company last appeared on the registry between Oct. 4, 2000, and June 10, 2005. According to its new registry file, Goodyear is seeking funding to support the redevelopment of its facilities. The company owns tire manufacturing plants in Napanee, Ont., and Medicine Hat, Alta., as well as a mixing centre in Valleyfield, Que.
