Here’s a look back at the news we covered this week:
Canada’s insurance industry has banded together with municipalities, disaster response organizations, and researchers to advocate for climate adaptation and resilience in Canada. Climate Proof Canada is an alliance of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), Insurance Brokers’ Association of Canada and companies such as Aviva, Intact Financial Corporation, and TD Insurance, as well as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, Métis National Council, Canadian Red Cross, and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “If it's just insurers, then it's easier for politicians and political staff to marginalize the issue,” said Craig Stewart, vice-president at the IBC. “If you have Indigenous groups, you've got disaster relief organizations, you have the Chamber of Commerce, you have environmental NGOs, including health NGOs, and you've got municipalities and insurers, it's much more difficult to ignore.”
Sébastien Labrecque has joined StrategyCorp as a senior consultant, bringing with him experience at the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada and time in the public service at Innovation and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Labrecque hopes to expand the firm’s digital economy offerings. “With COVID, we have a prime example where we all partake in the digital economy now,” he said. “I'm tapping into my expertise in this area, but also my colleagues’ networks.”
Moderna submitted nine of the 51 communication reports logged last week. Represented on the registry in-house by Patricia Gauthier, the general manager of Moderna’s Canadian operations, the company communicated with Innovation Minister François Philippe Champagne on Aug. 10; Kathryn Nowers, director of policy to Health Minister Patty Hajdu, on July 23; Darryl Patterson, director general of biomanufacturing strategy at Innovation, four times between July 7 and July 16; and Joelle Pacquette, director general of the procurement support services sector at Public Affairs and Procurement, on July 12, July 22, and July 30.
In new registrations, East Coast Environmental Law started its first file on Oct. 7 with Mark Butler, a member of the board of directors and consultant with NovaMark Advisors. Established in 2007, the Halifax-based organization advocates for the development of environmental laws in Atlantic Canada. It is calling for an extension of the Georges Bank moratorium to oil and gas exploration and drilling. Butler will communicate with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Environment, Natural Resources, and Fisheries, as well as with MPs and senators.
Increasing its representation on the Hill recently is Newmont Goldcorp North America, the Canadian branch of an American gold mining company operating in Ontario and Quebec. Newmont added consultants Mark Johnson and Marie Lemieux of Public Affairs Advisors on Sept. 23 and Sept. 29 respectively. They join colleagues Noah Niznick, James Anderson, and Michael von Herff, and will discuss mining industry operations, innovation, corporate responsibility, environmental sustainability and climate change. Johnson and Lemieux will communicate with 17 government bodies, including the PMO, Privy Council Office, Innovation, Natural Resources, Environment, and Crown-Indigenous Relations, as well as with MPs and senators.
Returning to the registry recently is Human Rights Watch. Farida Deif, the Canada director of the international non-governmental organization, became active on the registry on Oct. 3. Human Rights Watch was most recently registered with Deif until Sept. 16. Human Rights Watch is interested in discussing a number of domestic and international issues, including the provision of water and sanitation to First Nations communities in Northern Ontario. Deif will communicate with 14 government bodies, including the PMO, Privy Council Office, Global Affairs, Immigration, Justice, National Defence, and Health, as well as with MPs.
