Here’s the news we covered this week:

The final version of the new Lobbyists' Code of Conduct formalizes Lobbying Commissioner Nancy Bélanger’s view that GR professionals should be clear about what they’re spending on gifts and hospitality. “I'm asking them to abide by a code of conduct in which they will be careful about the value of the hospitality, the value of gifts, and how much annually they spend on the public office holders that they provide those gifts to,” Bélanger told The Lobby Monitor in a virtual interview on May 29.

The Lobby Monitor recently travelled to a a community centre in the Ottawa suburb of Kanata  to check out the Council of Canadians’ “Pharmacare Now” town hall. The event, which was one in a series held across the country, is meant to galvanize support for a single-payer pharmacare program. The organization is working on a grassroots approach to this particular campaign with the goal of convincing people across the country to talk to their MPs about why they want to see a pharmacare program come to fruition. “We’re trying to add a more grassroots element to this campaign to show that there are the big organizations and there are the broad umbrella groups that are pushing for [pharmacare] but there are also lots of people, ordinary people in MPs’ own constituencies that are aware of this and are pushing for it,” said Nikolas Barry-Shaw, trade and privatization campaigner for the council, in an interview with The Lobby Monitor.

After more than a year of consistent lobbying for a national school food program, Breakfast Club of Canada is considering a new way of making their views known after not seeing their policy ask included in Budget 2023, according to Judith Barry, co-creator and director of sustainable solutions at the organization. “We're still a supportive and collaborative stakeholder and contributor, but I think we've slightly positioned ourselves with a more assertive [stance] this time,” said Barry, referring to the organization’s plans for a shift in strategy. Barry spoke to The Lobby Monitor by phone on May 18.

The Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) filed the highest number (10) of communication reports last week, including one for a conversation with Defence Minister Anita Anand, which took place in Montréal, Que. Anand said in a tweet that she had a “productive discussion” on May 12 about the aerospace and defence industries with the AIAC.

Linde Inc. registered for the first time to discuss the clean technology investment tax credits that were formally launched in Budget 2023. Additionally, the company will seek the government’s support for hydrogen and industrial gas production projects, according to the registry file. The company will be represented by Alex Bernst, Brian Teefy, Lisa Samson, and Garry Keller of StrategyCorp Inc.

Also new to the registry is Kineticor, a company based in Calgary, Alta., that owns, develops and operates energy generation facilities. Kineticor is seeking funding to “expand and enhance” its renewable energy operations, according to the registry file. New West Public Affairs Inc. consultant Saeed Selvam is representing the company.

A separate green energy company, Innergex Renewable Energy Inc., has hired two consultants, Jonathan Ingraham and Cyrus Reporter from Gowling WLG. The company wants to discuss how renewable energy projects can help with green energy goals such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the transition from coal-powered energy.
