Here’s the news we covered this week:

Organizations spoke with The Lobby Monitor about their advocacy efforts to convince MPs to vote against the Conservatives’ non-confidence motion earlier this week. For example, a coalition of gun control advocates led by PolyRemembers are worried about what an early election could mean for parts of Bill C-21, An Act to amend certain Acts and to make certain consequential amendments (firearms), that haven’t yet been implemented even though the bill received royal assent in December 2023. “We were very happy to see that the motion of non-confidence today did not pass as it gives more time for the government to fulfill its election promises to Canadians before the next election,” said Heidi Rathjen, founder of PolyRemembers, on Sept. 25, the day of the unsuccessful non-confidence vote. “We were sounding the alarm because there's still hope but it's a race against time.”

The Lobby Monitor was in Toronto earlier this month to cover the NEXT Campaign Summit. Deputy editor Sergiy Slipchenko listened in as representatives from Equal Voice and Environmental Defence Canada discussed how technology helps them in their advocacy. “We are a team of seven full-time staff doing a lot with very little, and we rely on [technology] to get this done,” said Equal Voice’s Chi Nguyen.

Moving back to Ottawa–and specifically On Queen Street–Michelle McLean spoke to The Lobby Monitor about her decision to join Santis Health after leaving her executive position at Hill and Knowlton Strategies. “It's the right fit as a health expert, which is really the career I’ve cultivated over the last 20 years,” McLean said about joining Santis. “It was the right fit for me because I'm surrounded by other people who have dedicated their careers to becoming experts in health.”

In our weekly communication reports feature, the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) submitted the most communication reports to the federal lobbyists’ registry. The organization, represented by president and CEO Catherine Cobden, filed 18 reports. Cobden’s registry file lists 14 discussion topics including the federal budget, regulations related to climate change, and international trade policy issues. A total of 826 communications were submitted to the federal lobbyists’ registry between Sept. 16 and Sept. 22.

In this week’s registrations, Varme Energy is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time to discuss federal regulations, advocate for the expansion of clean electricity investment tax credits, and to secure federal funding. Sean Collins, CEO of Varme Energy, is the company’s representative on the federal registry. Varme Energy is an Edmonton-based company focused on developing waste-to-energy facilities.

Another first-time registration focusing on the clean energy industry is Awendio Solaris, which is seeking federal funding for the company's planned solar panel manufacturing plant. The company is represented by Julien Provencher-Proulx, a consultant at NATIONAL Public Relations. The company, which is based in London, does not currently operate any facilities but is planning to develop multiple sites across the world.

In new registrations, Northback has returned to the registry to engage with elected officials to raise awareness of its Grassy Mountain steel-making coal project in Alberta. The company is represented by Emily Gilroy of Crestview Strategy.

The following are new registry files, registrations and reactivated files posted on the federal lobbyists' registry between Sept. 23, 2024, and Sept. 27, 2024. The information is based on a search of the registry on Sept. 27, at 9:08 a.m. ET.
