ISSUE 2024-04-26

Issue Date:
Fri, 2024-04-26 (All day)
Issue Email Content:

Here’s the news we covered this week:

Crestview Strategy’s new Australia-based vice-president, Matthew Doman spoke to The Lobby Monitor about the company’s decision to open an office in Sydney. “We're looking at some of those key sectors of the Australian economy, which coincidentally are also key sectors in the Canadian economy and so the experience and skill set at Crestview will transfer very well to this market,” said Doman, who leads the Sydney office. “As a firm, we're really interested in and engaged in the significant changes and transformations that are underway and helping our clients deal with those.”

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) was the most active lobbying organization in the first quarter of 2024. The NCCM, which is represented by its CEO Stephen Brown, submitted the highest number of communication reports to the federal lobbyists’ registry. The organization filed a total of 95 reports, with two-thirds of those communications taking place during its January 29 lobby day. The group’s advocacy day took place on the seventh annual national day of remembrance for the 2017 shooting in a Quebec City mosque that claimed the lives of six Muslims.

The Lobby Monitor spoke with the Smart Health Benefits Coalition about its recommendation that the federal government “repurpose” its pharmacare funding to help Canadians with out-of-pocket costs instead of displacing workplace health coverage. “Why would we want to spend money on people that already are successfully having coverage? We believe we could use that money to repurpose that. Why not take that money instead and enhance it for people that have no coverage?” said Carolyne Eagan, spokesperson for the group. “Or you can actually shift some of that money to higher-cost drugs or rare disease drugs, where the out-of-pocket [cost] is unmanageable for people.”

In this week’s communication reports, Telesat Canada submitted the highest number of communication reports to the federal lobbyists’ registry in the past week. The company is represented by its president and CEO Daniel Goldberg, who submitted 36 out of the f 1,781 communications submitted to the federal registry between April 15 and 21. The company is seeking discussions with government officials on federal funding programs and advocating that the government establish a national space council to promote and support Canada’s space economy.

In this week’s registrations, Ecotrust Canada is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time as it seeks to engage officials on policy and regulations related to fisheries in British Columbia. The organization is represented by Daniel Bernier and Abigail Tait of Earnscliffe Strategies. The consultants will discuss regulations affecting B.C. fisheries and advocate for the implementation of an owner-operator policy in West Coast commercial fisheries.

Also joining the federal registry for the first time is Conifer Energy, represented by Andrew Balfour and Braedan de Bakker of Rubicon Strategy Inc. According to the consultants’ files, they will communicate with government officials to brief them about continuing federal support for Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) projects, and to pursue funding opportunities. Conifer Energy is a company which specializes in CCUS technology for the oil and gas industry.

In new registrations, Nutri-Pea has hired Alex Cerelli of StrategyCorp Inc. to represent it on the federal registry. The reason listed for seeking discussions with government officials is to provide information about the agricultural sector, according to Cerelli’s file. Nutri-Pea is a Manitoba-based company which focuses on the production of plant-based food alternatives
