ISSUE 2024-04-05

Issue Date:
Fri, 2024-04-05 (All day)
Issue Email Content:

Here’s the news we covered this week:

Daniel Breton, CEO and president of Electric Mobility Canada, and Adam Johnson, senior vice-president of external affairs at NanoOne, discussed the challenges facing the electric vehicle (EV) industry, and the support they hope to see in the federal government 2024 Budget. Breton stated that the government needs to implement a national EV strategy to help the industry’s development. “The industry needs to be able to know where we're headed, not only now, but in five-to-10 years from now,” said Breton. “It's hard for companies to invest, or for banks to fund EV industry companies if we don't know where we're headed.”

The Lobby Monitor covered a number of hires throughout the lobbying industry in this week’s On Queen Street. The common thread among them is their affiliation with the Conservative party at the federal or provincial level. The new hires include Sandstone Group’s newest senior adviser, former federal Conservative minister Tony Clement, and Chase Tribble, who worked for former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole, has joined Counsel Public Affairs’ federal practice as a senior consultant.

In this week’s communication reports, Cooperation Canada submitted the highest number of communication reports with all of them taking place on Feb. 6, 2024. Kate Higgins, CEO of Cooperation Canada, represents the organization on the federal lobbyists’ registry. She submitted a total of 44 reports in the week of March 25. A total of 136 communications were submitted to the registry in the past week. Higgins’ registry file states that the group will engage government officials on the Canadian international development program.

In this week’s registrations, Waabi Innovation Inc. joined the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time to discuss issues related to self-driving vehicle technology, and to seek government funding. The company is represented by Adam Yahn of Summa Strategies. Waabi Innovation Inc. is a technology business which focuses on the development of virtual simulation software to train self-driving artificial intelligence for vehicles.

Another company joining the registry for the first time is EVLO Energy Storage Inc., represented by Dan Lovell of Sussex Strategy. The conversations will focus on federal funding opportunities for the development of renewable energy projects, and to provide feedback on the government’s investment tax credits (ITCs) for clean technologies, according to Lovell’s file. Specifically, the firm aims to discuss how domestic content adders could be used in clean energy components.

In new registrations, L3Harris Technologies Canada Inc. has increased its representation on the federal registry with the hiring of Naresh Raghubeer, Kevin Bosch, and Hugues Théorêt of Sandstone Group. The company will seek to secure defence equipment contracts with the federal government, and to engage government officials. L3Harris is a defence and security company which provides the federal government with products and services in the areas of defence, public safety, commercial aviation, law enforcement, and remote sensing.
