Sandra Aubé, TACT’s new senior director, told The Lobby Monitor that her experience in politics, and geopolitics in particular, is a crucial part of her new company’s plan to strengthen its federal practice. “Any consulting firm doing government relations or public affairs should have someone that understands geopolitics,” she said. “It's incredibly important and it's impacting the whole supply chain. Even though sometimes we don't see it or we don't think about it, the choices that we make in business [such as] where we're going to work [and] with whom we’re going to work [has] an impact.”

The Lobby Monitor spoke with Fred DeLorey, partner at NorthStar Public Affairs, and Cam Holmstrom, co-founder of Niipaawi Strategies, who shared their insights into the federal government’s 2023 Fall Economic Statement. “I didn't have high expectations for this economic statement, but I actually was more underwhelmed than I may have expected,” said Holmstrom. “And that just had more to do with the delay in some of the actions like housing.”

Kate Fenske, chair of International Downtown Association Canada’s leadership group, told The Lobby Monitor about the organization’s first day on the Hill and the top priorities for the group which represents business improvement associations across the country.The main issue for the day was a call to extend the deadline for businesses who received loans from the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA), a funding mechanism created by the federal government in April 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In weekly communications reports, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) found itself submitting the highest number of communication reports for the week of Nov. 13. The 37 reports (out of a total of 3,179 reports submitted that week) were filed under the name of the CFA’s acting executive director, Scott Ross. CFA held a lobby day on Oct. 24 during which the organization communicated with Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay, and 23 other MPs.

In this week’s registrations, Nova East Wind joins the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time as it seeks authorization to develop an off-shore wind farm near Goldboro, N.S. The company will be represented by Michel Samson, a consultant at Cox & Palmer. The consultant will engage government officials to explore funding opportunities, and policy and regulatory options that would permit Nova East Wind to receive authorization for early offshore wind farm development.

Aqua Action has also joined the registry for the first time to discuss the Freshwater Action Plan and Canada Water Act. The organization is represented by Aaron Freeman of Pivot Strategic Consulting. Freeman is looking to discuss the federal government’s commitment to renew the Canada Water Act, and the innovation and economic development aspects of the Freshwater Action Plan.

Moving onto new registrations, Carolyn Smith, Matthew Campbell, and Brian St. Louis joined their Temple Scott Associates colleagues in representing Molson Canada 2005 on the registry. Brian Klunder, Don Moors and Joshua Matthewman were already registered to lobby on behalf of the company. The discussions will focus on several topics including government initiatives that support economic development and growth, and the government’s “proposed integrated management approach to plastic products to prevent waste and pollution.”
