ISSUE 2023-09-15

Issue Date:
Fri, 2023-09-15 (All day)
Issue Email Content:

Here’s the news we covered this week:

In this week’s On Queen Street, The Lobby Monitor spoke with Alex Kohut and Annette Goerner about their new roles at Spark Advocacy. Kohut, the former senior manager of research and advertising at the Prime Minister’s Office, is now the senior director of research at Spark. Goerner, who has over two decades of journalism experience, will be joining the firm’s public relations department as director.

The Lobby Monitor interviewed the Canadian Cattle Association’s Nathan Phinney, president about the organization's latest campaign, “Say No To A Bad Deal.” The CCA is working on the campaign alongside the Canadian Meat Council and National Cattle Feeders’ Association. The main concern for the groups’ members is that the U.K., which is expected to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (of which Canada is already a member), won’t accept Canada’s system of regulating agricultural products, effectively barring their members’ products from entering their market.

Accelerate, an industrial alliance representing the zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) industry, is planning a lobby day and a Sparks St. event to advocate for the development of a domestic supply chain. We spoke to Matthew Fortier, president and CEO of the organization, about the upcoming event, the industry’s goals, and Accelerate’s advocacy efforts.

In weekly communication reports, the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) submitted the highest number of communication reports – 11 – during the week of Sept. 4. The total number of communication reports submitted to the federal lobbyists’ registry was 151. The organization is represented by its president and CEO, Michael Mueller.

In this week’s registrations, Full Circle Environmental Solutions has hired three Global Public Affairs consultants to represent it on the federal lobbyists' registry. The organization wants to discuss potential government support for funding and resources to advance “innovative environmental technology in the waste tire recycling sector,” and to discuss policies relevant to that sector, according to the consultants’ registry files.

Another organization joining the registry for the first time is Alberta Grains, represented by its interim general manager, Mark Olson. The organization is looking to discuss Bill C-234, an Act to Amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, according to its registry file.

In new registrations, Next Hydrogen Solutions has hired Jason Evans, a consultant with Sussex Strategy Group, to represent it in discussions about hydrogen production and technology. The company specializes in developing and constructing water electrolysis hydrogen generators, which helps companies transition their operations to net-zero emissions.
