Issue Date:

Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor reviewed lobbying data from the second quarter of 2023 and spoke with Cameron Holmstrom, founder of Niipaawi Strategies and Ashton Arsenault, vice-president at Crestview Strategy, to contextualize the findings. The departments of natural resources, innovation and environment retained their Q1 status as the most popular targets in advocacy efforts, which Holmstrom attributed to the Liberal government’s focus on reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. “When it comes to the green transition, there's so many different industries that are affected,” said Holmstrom. “If you're going to be lobbying around [environment], you're also talking about solutions, which means you're going to be dealing with ISED, whether it be for funding for pilot projects or to help spur the innovation side of it.”

July’s monthly communications saw Breakfast Club of Canada take the top spot again as it submitted the highest number of communications, 46 out of a total of 1,451 reports, as it advocates for the creation of a national school food program. A Quebec-based shipbuilding company, Chantier Davie Canada Inc., and Rogers Communications were the other two organizations topping the list in July.

Two organizations with a focus on Canada’s housing crisis and a technology company were among the top contributors to the 157 communication reports submitted during the week of Aug.7. Communications about housing-related issues such as funding for co-operative housing projects and the elimination of homelessness in Canada led Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF) to submit the highest number of communication reports – eight – during the past week.

In this week’s registrations, Kruger Energy Inc. joined the registry for the first time as it seeks financial assistance from the federal government to develop hydro power plants. The company is represented by Martin Beaulieu, an independent consultant.

Another green energy tech company, EcoPro Innovation Co., Ltd., has joined the registry for the first time. Representing the company are Caroline Charest, Begona Bernardez Padilla, Hyunchul (Henry) Chung, and Mathieu Ouellet, all of KPMG LLP. According to all four registry files, the consultants will assist EcoPro Innovation with an application to the Strategic Innovation Fund to develop a lithium hydroxide manufacturing facility in Quebec.

Also new to the registry is Andrew Sullivan, CEO and president of the Internet Society.  Although it may be Sullivan’s first time on the registry, the organization was previously represented through third party consultants, most recently in 2020. The organization will seek to hold discussions about the Online News Act with the goal of preventing the act “from contributing to Internet fragmentation that would harm and restrict Canada’s access to an open, globally-connected, secure and trustworthy Internet,” according to its registry file.
