Here’s the news we covered this week:
The Lobby Monitor spoke with labour groups who will hold a rally on Parliament Hill to reinforce their message that the federal government needs to introduce anti-scab legislation by the end of 2023. “On September 19, we’re taking that message to MPs in Ottawa,” said Mark Hancock, president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees. “We are excited to bring our message to Parliament Hill … to tell the federal government we haven’t forgotten their promise, and [that] we expect to see strong anti-scab legislation introduced before the end of the year.”
After 15 years of working for others, long-time Liberal commentator Greg MacEachern is striking out on his own with the launch of KAN Strategies. The lobbyist spoke with The Lobby Monitor about his decision to go solo after leaving Proof Strategies, the inspiration behind his company’s name, and the reason he became a Liberal in university.
In weekly communication reports, the National Cattle Feeders' Association (NCFA) submitted the highest number of communication reports – 10 – during the week of Aug. 28. A total of 109 communication reports were submitted to the federal lobbyists’ registry. NCFA’s communications focused on several topics, including the organization’s pre-budget submission, said Gina Devlin, communications manager at the NCFA.
In this week’s registrations, Bison Low Carbon Ventures is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time to discuss federal support for carbon capture and storage projects. The corporation is represented by Christopher Ghazouly, owner of Alberta North Projects Ltd., a management and government relations firm.
TryCycle Data Systems is another company joining the registry for the first time. It is represented by Syntax Strategic consultant Jon Dugal. The consultant will advocate for the creation of a dedicated fund to support mental health support for veterans. The consultant’s registry file specifically notes the support would be through “anonymous, 24/7 accessible peer-to-peer support and convenient self-completed mental health applications.”
In new registrations, the David Suzuki Institute hired Bushra Asghar to represent it on the registry. She will advocate for more ambitious laws, policies, and programs to address climate change, according to the registry file. Asghar will also advocate for the federal government to develop and implement a youth climate corps program.
