Here’s the news we covered this week:
With a total of 121 reports, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne proved to be the most lobbied cabinet minister in the 2023-24 parliamentary session, according to The Lobby Monitor’s review of communication reports. Francis Drouin, parliamentary secretary to Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay, was cited in 97 reports, making him the most popular parliamentary secretary. However, the most popular MP overall was Conservative environment critic Gérard Deltell with 171 communications.
Representatives from the Canadian Steel Producers Association and the Aluminium Association of Canada spoke to the media on Aug. 8 to discuss their request that the federal government quickly implement measures to prevent the dumping of aluminum and steel products by Chinese producers. The organizations called on the government to implement new tariffs on Chinese imports using the Customs Tariff Act.
Longtime Earnscliffe partner Nikki Hill joined a brand new firm that may be the only firm in Canada to be founded and run by Sikh women. Hill started at Core Firm on July 29 and looks forward to focusing her lobbying expertise on environmental, social, and non-profit issues. Core co-founder Parm Kahlon told The Lobby Monitor that she’s excited for her firm’s future with Hill on board.
In this week’s communication reports, Douglas Richardson of W Law LLP submitted the highest number of communication reports to the federal lobbyists’ registry, on behalf of the City of Prince Albert, which seeks federal financial support for a “major infrastructure project.” Richardson, who represents the municipality in Saskatchewan on the federal registry, submitted 10 communication reports. A total of 137 communication reports were submitted to the registry during the week of July 29.
In this week’s registrations, the dog days of summer impacted registration numbers this week with only two organizations registering for the first time. The Lands Advisory Board Resource Centre is one of those organizations and it is seeking to lobby officials about issues related to the Framework Agreement on First Nations Land Management. Aaron Freeman of Pivot Strategic Consulting has registered to lobby on behalf of the organization.
The Capilano Students' Union registered its board member Arpandeep Singh to advocate for student issues and federal funding for housing and affordable food for students.
And a final note, Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein told MPs during his Aug. 8 appearance before the House public accounts committee that he has opened a third preliminary probe into Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault’s alleged business dealings related to Global Health Imports, according to reporting by Global News.
The following are new registry files, registrations and reactivated files posted on the federal lobbyists' registry between Aug. 5, 2024, and Aug. 9, 2024. The information is based on a search of the registry on Aug. 9, at 9:40 a.m. ET.
