Issue Date:

Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Canadian Nurses Association’s new president Dr. Kimberly LeBlanc and new CEO Dr. Valerie Grdisa spoke to Hill Times Health, a sister publication to The Lobby Monitor, about their reasons for jumping into the leadership roles and why they’re advocating that nurses’ scope of practice (as in the range of health care services they can provide) be expanded. “A lot of nurses are not working at what they're allowed to work at because we pigeon-hole them into these restricted activities or controlled acts depending on which jurisdiction you're in,” said Grdisa about the CNA’s top advocacy issue. “It's so critical that we fully optimize their capabilities because we have a workforce shortage across all types of health workers.” (The Hill Times Health article was republished on The Lobby Monitor.)

The Lobby Monitor reported on the House ethics committee’s July 17 meeting where Stephen Anderson, a former business partner to Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault, said that the “Randy” cited in texts in September 2022 was not the minister. Boissonnault’s business dealings have been under the spotlight recently after Global News reported that Anderson, who co-founded a company with Boissonnault when the minister was not in politics, had made references in text messages to a “Randy” who was involved in the company’s activities. At the time of those messages, Boissonnault was tourism minister and associate minister of finance.

With 31 reports, the Cruise Lines International Association snagged the title of most active lobbying organization for the month of June. Coming in second and third, respectively, were the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the University of Manitoba. A total of 2,051 communications were filed in June.

The Canadian Chamber, however, did come out on top for the highest number of communications reports submitted during the week of July 8. The organization is represented by president and CEO Perrin Beatty, who filed 20 reports to the federal lobbyists registry. Beatty’s registry file includes multiple discussion topics such as defence procurement programs, environmental regulations and international trade policies.

In this week’s registrations, Nord Quantique Inc. is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time as it seeks funding to support the company in its efforts to develop superconducting quantum computers. The Quebec-based tech company is represented by Martin Rust, Terry Nemeth, and Lisa Samson of StrategyCorp Inc. Nord Quantique designs, develops, and manufactures superconducting quantum computers for various applications across multiple industries.

Also joining the registry for the first time is ALS Action Canada, which is looking for increased government support of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their caregivers. The organization is represented by Andrea Rodriguez of Global Public Affairs. The consultant’s goals will be to increase the government’s awareness of the disease and to convince the government to increase its support for patients with ALS, with a focus on improving access to therapy and more funding for research.

In new registrations, EverWind Fuels Company has hired Fred DeLorey of NorthStar Public Affairs to represent it in conversations with the federal government as it seeks federal funding for clean energy projects. The company is looking to discuss federal financial incentives introduced through legislation, such as tax credits, according to DeLorey’s file. The consultant will also provide EverWind with public policy advice as it develops its green hydrogen and ammonia production capacity. EverWind is a North American green-hydrogen development company focused on the development and construction of large-scale green hydrogen projects.
