Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor spoke with Environmental Defence Canada’s Aliénor Rougeot and Canadian Labour Congress’ Bea Bruske about the group’s reaction to the passing of the Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act and their next steps as the government implements the legislation. “We wanted it in the law, and not just as a program, because the transition is going to happen over several decades and we can't have it switch with every government,” said Rougeot. “We're really happy that it's there, but we know we're going to have to do a lot of work to actually make sure that it is robust.”

David Adams, president and CEO of Global Automakers of Canada, and CLC president Bruske told The Lobby Monitor about why their organizations support a potential government response to China’s electric vehicle trade practices. “The association's principle has always been that we support an open, free, and fair trading environment with respect to international trade,” said Adams. “What we're looking for is to ensure that–whatever ends up coming out of this consultation process–the open and fair trading environment remains in place.”

The Lobby Monitor interviewed Blackbird Strategies’ first vice-president, Travis Boissoneau, for this week’s On Queen Street. “The overall goal is to bring the excitement and passion that I have for working with First Nation communities to the firm and bring the firm's expertise to these communities,” said Boissoneau. Also noted in the article is journalist Graham Richardson’s decision to leave CTV News Ottawafor a new managing director gig at Edelman Global Advisory.

In this week’s communication reports, the Ford Motor Company of Canada was the most active lobbying group, with 12 submitted communication reports. The Ford Motor Company is represented on the federal lobbyists’ registry by its president and CEO Bev Goodman. The CEO’s registry file includes many possible discussion topics including the federal government's Auto Innovation Fund and free trade agreements with Korea, Japan, and the European Union.

In this week’s registrations, joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time is Paladin Energy Limited, which is looking to discuss policies related to clean and nuclear energy with government officials. The company is represented by Jeff Smith of FGS Longview. Paladin Energy is an Australian-based mining company, which provides uranium for nuclear energy projects.

Listenmore Technology is also joining the federal registry for the first time as it seeks federal funding from the National Research Council’s Industrial Research Assistance Program. The company is represented by William Adams of SJE Consulting Ltd. Listenmore Technology is a corporate and marketing advisory firm based in Vancouver, B.C.

In new registrations, Jean Michel Laurin of TACTIX Government Relations & Public Affairs Inc. is joining his TACTIX colleague Philip Baldwin in representing Compagnie Alpek Polyester Canada. Communications will focus on potential federal funding to support the company’s aim of “advancing a circular Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) economy in Canada” and to discuss Canada’s regulations prohibiting single-use plastics. Alpek Canada is a petrochemical company manufacturing PET, which is a recyclable plastic used for packaging soft drinks, juice boxes, and other similar products.
