ISSUE 2024-06-14

Issue Date:
Fri, 2024-06-14 (All day)
Issue Email Content:

Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor spoke with Derrick Hynes, CEO and president of Federally Regulated Employers Transportation & Communications, about the group’s efforts to convince parliamentarians to amend Bill C-58, commonly referred to as “anti-scab legislation.” The bill aims to ban the use of replacement workers during labour disputes. “We think the bill requires more flexibility for circumstances where there will be a major disruption to Canadians,” said Hynes. “There needs to be exceptions in the interests of economic security so that a strike cannot have the power to essentially shut the economy down.”

In this week’s On Queen Street, The Lobby Monitor covered several new hires, promotions, and title changes at Canada’s lobbying firms. We started with new titles for Compass Rose’s founder Jacquie LaRocque, who is now CEO, and Marci Surkes, who is now the company’s chief strategy officer; and ended by telling you that Sabrina Grover has joined Spark Advocacy and NorthStar Public Affairs as a senior account manager.

Moving over to health policy, the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Manuel Arango spoke to The Lobby Monitor about his organization’s advocacy efforts to push the federal government to publish draft rules for new restrictions on the advertising of some foods and beverages to children. This push includes a letter from the Stop Marketing to Kids Coalition (of which Heart and Stroke is a member) to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the issue. “We weren’t getting the feeling that [the rules were] forthcoming,” said Arango about why the coalition chose to write to Trudeau. “We were getting antsy, [and] we sent the open letter. This has been committed to seven times since 2015. It's been nine years now.”

In this week’s communication reports, Mouvement d'implication francophone d'Orléans (MIFO) submitted the highest number of communication reports to the federal lobbyists’ registry during the week of June 3. The organization is represented by Marie-Claude Doucet of Gestion Cyan, who submitted a total of 35 reports. The organization has been seeking federal funding for the development of a cultural and community centre, according to Doucet’s registry file.

In this week’s registrations, the Association of Power Producers of Ontario (APPrO) is joining the federal lobbyists' registry for the first time to talk to government officials about the Clean Electricity Regulations. Roberto Chávez of Sussex Strategy represents the organization on the federal registry. The consultant’s communications will focus on the public engagement process for the regulatory design of the Clean Electricity Regulations.

Lily Mesh of Wellington Dupont Public Affairs has registered to represent two ski resorts located in Ontario which are seeking federal funding to support their operations and to raise awareness of the ski industry. The clients are Mount St. Louis Moonstone and Ski Snow Valley. The two resorts are located on the outskirts of Barrie, Ont.

Frédérique Duplain-Laferrière is joining his colleague Philip Baldwin of TACTIX Government Relations and Public Affairs Inc. in representing Fertility Matters Canada on the federal registry. Communications will focus on discussions about receiving federal funding through the Sexual and Reproductive Health program and to promote the creation of a national fertility strategy, according to Duplain-Laferrière’s registry file. Fertility Matters is a national organization which advocates for equitable access to fertility care.
