Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor interviewed Brian Kingston, president and CEO of Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, about the group’s newly launched campaign “Road to 2035”. The campaign advocates for the federal government to provide the automotive industry with more support in reaching the goal of 100 per cent electric vehicle sales by 2035. “The hope is that we will focus the minds of political leadership on the serious gaps that we currently have in our public charging infrastructure that need to be addressed and closed rapidly,” said Kingston.

In this week’s On Queen Street, Andrew Sennyah spoke with The Lobby Monitor about his new role as senior consultant at Crestview Strategy. He discussed his previous experience in the Alberta government with the United Conservative Party, and his time at the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses. “There's a certain advantage that many lobbyists have in coming out of a minister's office, but I am bringing something quite a bit different, which is deep industry experience,” he said.

In this week’s communication reports, The Fruit & Vegetable Growers of Canada, submitted the highest number of communication reports in the week of June 24. The organization is represented by Amy Argentino, the group’s director of operations. Argentino submitted a total of 14 communications which were held during the group’s June 4 Farm to Plate 2024 spring advocacy event. The lobby day was jointly hosted by the FVGC and the Canadian Produce Marketing Association.

In this week’s registrations, Polystyvert Inc. is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time as it looks to discuss opportunities for increased investment in Canada’s recycling infrastructure. The company is represented on the federal lobbyists’ registry by Elena Mantagaris of Sphere of Influence Inc. Polystyvert is a Quebec-based firm which recycles polystyrene products.

Also joining the federal registry for the first time is the Daymark Foundation, which is seeking discussions with the federal government to raise support and awareness for women’s mental health. The organization is represented by Andrea Rodriguez of Global Public Affairs. The foundation was created with the aim to “transform the way we think about and address mental health in Canada,”

In new registrations, the Coffee Association of Canada has returned to the federal registry after being inactive for over a decade. The group returns to the registry with Chris Gray of Chris Gray & Associates representing in communications with designated public office holders.

Gray will engage parliamentarians to raise awareness of the benefits of coffee consumption, according to the consultant’s registry file. He will also discuss Bill S-211, Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act.

Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor heard multiple perspectives on the federal government’s capital gains tax changes. Organizations including the Grain Growers of Canada, the Canadian Medical Association, and the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses shared their members’ concerns with the measure and the amendments they hope to see in the near future. “There's always a chance and there's always a hope that there will be a reverse course,” said Kyle Larkin, executive director at the Grain Growers of Canada.

In this week’s On Queen Street, Earnscliffe Strategies’ newest principal, Bil Hetherington, spoke to The Lobby Monitor about how his experience in the energy industry sets him apart from other lobbyists. “There's a certain advantage that many lobbyists have in coming out of a minister's office, but I am bringing something quite a bit different, which is deep industry experience,” he said.

The Lobby Monitor spoke with Hunter Doubt, the newly elected president of the Government Relations Institute of Canada. Priorities will include “trying to find new creative solutions to attract more members, possibly through more targeted advertising and marketing,” Doubt said.

In this week’s communication reports, Enbridge Inc. was the most active lobbying group during the week of June 17. The company is represented by its president and CEO, Greg Ebel, who filed 18 reports. As per Ebel’s registry file, representatives of Enbridge are looking to communicate with government officials about multiple issues related to the energy industry including competition, climate policies and initiatives, and market access. A total of 304 communications were submitted last week.

In this week’s registrations, joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time is Svante Technologies Inc., which is seeking discussions about its carbon capture, utilization, and storage technology. Representing the company is Richard Maksymetz of Alar Strategy Group Inc. Svante is a carbon capture and removal provider, which focuses on providing decarbonization technologies to industries with high greenhouse gas emissions.

Also joining the federal registry for the first time is Canada Powered by Women, an organization that advocates on behalf of women whose work has them involved in Canada’s transition to a net-zero economy. The advocacy group is represented by Julia Parsons of Hill & Knowlton. Parsons will engage with the federal government to discuss “the future of Canadian energy and economic prosperity during energy transformation.”

Airboss of America Corporation has hired Vienna Psihos of Sussex Strategy to engage with government officials about the procurement of supplies and equipment for Ukraine. Airboss is a manufacturing and chemical company with multiple subsidiaries including Airboss Defence Group, manufactures personal protection equipment and mobility systems for the military.

Editor’s Note: The Lobby Monitor will not publish on Mon. July 1, 2024, due to Canada Day. Our daily news reporting returns on Tues. July 2. Have a safe and happy long weekend!
