Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor spoke with Chris Benedetti, managing partner at Sussex Strategy Group, about the firm’s acquisition of Cumberland Strategy. In order to keep pace with increasing client demand, the firm needed to “go deeper, go broader, and be able to keep pace with what our clients' challenges and demands and opportunities might be,” said Benedetti. “That's a big part of the rationale for this move, as well, and we're continuing to seek out those opportunities. We think that the landscape for doing government relations, communications, public affairs and advisory services work in the future is going to be robust and we want to be ready to meet our client needs and surpass their expectations.”

U.S.-based Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company submitted the highest number of communication reports – 10 – during the week of July 31. The corporation seeks to “comment on Canada’s position with respect to US Inflation Reduction Act’s transferable credits and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development pillar [two] treatment,” according to its registry file. A total of 133 reports were submitted last week.

In this week’s registrations, Magneto Investments LP is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time. The organization is responsible for the Dumont Nickel Project and is seeking financial support for the project. Kema Joseph, a consultant with Crestview Strategy, is representing the organization’s file on the registry.

First-time registrant Équité Association, an organization focusing on insurance fraud, hired Sussex Strategy Group consultants Devin McCarthy and Ingrid Ravary-Konopka to represent it on the Hill. The organization wants to discuss the privacy provisions of Bill C-27, Digital Charter Implementation Act, 2022, and raise awareness about insurance fraud and vehicle theft in Canada, according to the consultants’ registry files.

In new registrations, Diabetes Canada has added three PAA Advisory consultants, Tara Mazurk, Noah Niznick, and Matthew Larventz, to represent it on the registry. The consultants will advocate for federal funding for the Framework for Diabetes in Canada, the Canadian Diabetes Strategy, and diabetes research in general, according to the consultants’ registry files.

Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Body Shop is advocating the federal government to extend election “day” to three days, and to move it to the weekend. The Lobby Monitor interviewed the company’s vice president of marketing, Hilary Lloyd, who explained that the goal of the campaign is to increase voter turnout, especially amongst the youth.“We are proposing to hold federal elections on both Saturday and Sunday,” said Lloyd. “This would give youth more time to vote outside of school, work and family commitments, and the opportunity to work and participate in the election itself.”

The Lobby Monitor spoke with the top three organizations by number of submitted communication reports in the second quarter of 2023 about the methods and strategy of their advocacy efforts. Each organization pursued different ways of reaching crucial stakeholders and spreading awareness of their particular cause.

Cooperation Canada submitted the largest number of communication reports in the week of July 24 as it sought discussions with the federal government about providing humanitarian groups with additional funding. Cooperation Canada contributed 33 out of 137 total communications.

In this week’s registrations, Generate Upcycle is joining the federal lobbyists’ registry for the first time as it is looking to secure funding from the federal government’s green incentive programs. The company is interested in discussing investment tax credits, and initiatives that would provide funds to assist the firm to produce natural gas and green hydrogen from organic waste.

Also new to the registry is Helium Developers Association of Canada as it joins to advocate the federal government on policies related to the exploration and development of helium. The organization wants the federal government to create policies that will allow upstream helium exploration and development, and to provide companies in the sector with a “fair and equal tax treatment provided [to] mineral resource developers,” according to the registry file.

In new registrations, VoltaXplore Inc. has added another consultant to its roster to discuss government support for battery manufacturing. The company will communicate with officials about its funding application and the government’s support for battery manufacturing in Canada.
