Here’s the news we covered this week:
Bruce MacDonald, Imagine Canada’s president and CEO, told The Lobby Monitor about his organization’s campaign to find a “home in government” for the charitable and non-profit sector. “Charities and non-profits employ 2.5 million people [and represent] 8.3 per cent of the GDP… yet at a federal level, there is no place to have proactive holistic conversations,” said Bruce MacDonald. “Environmental groups will talk to the environment minister, health groups will talk to the health minister. But there's really nobody that looks after [our] industry.”
In this week’s On Queen Street we spoke with Craig Loewen, former director of communications at Canada Energy Regulator, who is now a director at Global Public Affairs’ , office in Calgary, Alta. Loewen discussed his areas of expertise in energy and natural resources, his experience in working for the Alberta Progressive Conservatives and Canada’s energy regulator,, and what issues he will be monitoring as he settles into his new role.
The Climate Caucus Council emerged as the organization with the highest number of submitted communication reports to the federal lobbyists’ registry. The organization sought to discuss funding, policy and programs in relation to mitigation of climate change. Of the 195 reports submitted to the registry last week, 23 came from the Climate Caucus, whose registry file is represented by Alex Lidstone, the organization’s executive director.
In weekly registrations, Calgary Opera, Manitoba Opera, and Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre have joined the federal lobbying registry for the first time to discuss possible funding from Canadian Heritage, PrairiesCan, and the feds’ new tourism strategy. PAA Advisory’s Sean Casey is representing all three organizations on the registry. His PAA colleagues, Andrew Walker and Elizabeth Seip, are now registered to lobby on behalf of Manitoba Opera.
Another company joining the registry for the first time is Pantero Group, a Montreal-based transportation development company. Pantero joined the federal lobbyists’ registry to discuss government initiatives that could lead to funding for the company’s activities. Pantero Group’s efforts focus on the design, development and manufacturing of sustainable public transport technologies. The company’s president, Jean-Francois Audet, is responsible for the file.
Spotlight Development Inc., a Toronto-based real-estate development company, has joined the registry for the first time and will be represented by ONpoint Strategy Group consultant Krystle Caputo. The group is seeking financial assistance from the federal government to build affordable housing. Caputo will seek to communicate with Finance and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
