Here’s the news we covered this week:

Wednesday’s cabinet shuffle broke the lull of the summer break, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau changing 30 out of 38 ministers. The Lobby Monitor discussed the most significant changes, the effect it will have on lobbying, which ministers left and which ones joined the cabinet with several senior consultants across the political spectrum.

In this week’s On Queen Street, we interviewed Kyle Larkin, Grain Growers of Canada’s newly hired executive director, on his new role and what the future holds for the organization’s advocacy efforts. Larkin discussed his previous experience, what landed him the job, and the issues he will be focusing on once the House returns in September.

Organizations with the highest number of communication reports submitted in the past week sought discussions on a national school food program, nature conservation, and funding for university research programs. Their reports contributed to the 282 total submissions posted during the week of July 17. The Breakfast Club of Canada (BCC) held an email marketing campaign in June, which led it to submitting 68 reports.

This week’s registrants joined the federal lobbyists’ registry to discuss infrastructure initiatives for zero-emission vehicle charging stations, funding for civil society organizations, multi-mission aircraft procurement, and Canada’s Green Building Strategy.

Joining the lobbyists’ registry for the first time is EnerSavings Inc, represented by Katie Boothby-Kung from Enterprise Canada. Boothby-Kung’s registry file was posted on July 26, backdated to June 12. EnerSavings is seeking to engage the federal government on its Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. The company is seeking communications with Natural Resources.

HanVoice, represented by its executive director Chan Woo Chung, joined the registry for the first time as it seeks funding for civil society organizations. The organization is seeking discussions with the Prime Minister’s Office and Global Affairs. The firm will engage the federal government to secure funding for civil society groups working on the improvement of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea).

In new registrations, Bombardier has added another consultant to its roster as it seeks to engage in an open procurement competition to provide Canada with multi-mission aircraft. The company hired MH2 Advisory Services Inc. consultant Michael Hood to represent its registry file.

Here’s the news we covered this week:

The Lobby Monitor discussed summer lobbying, what it entails, and how lobbyists keep themselves busy while the MPs are in their ridings. We spoke about this and more with consultants Andrea Sarkic and Muhammad Ali, as well as Dave Carey, vice-president of government and industry relations at Canadian Canola Growers Association. As Sarkic said, “just because MPs leave the dance, it doesn't mean the music stops.”

In monthly communications, the top three organizations held discussions on a national school food program, natural resources, and the environment. Their discussions contributed to the 2,740 monthly communication reports submitted in the month of June. The top organization, Breakfast Club of Canada, conducted an email campaign targeting MPs and ministers, which led it to secure first place with 72 submitted communication reports.

As for weekly communications, the Climate Caucus Council submitted the highest number of communication reports to the federal lobbyists’ registry during the week of July 3 as it sought to discuss funding, policy and programs in relation to mitigation of climate change. “The federal government needs to stay the course on their current climate goals and targets,” said Alex Lidstone, the organization’s executive director. “Lots of our members have great climate plans, but they simply cannot achieve their goals on their own. They need the federal government to be working alongside them to help get community emissions down.” Of the 195 reports submitted to the registry last week, 23 came from the Climate Caucus.

In this week’s registrations, companies join the federal lobbyists’ registry to discuss potash and salt mining, electrical grid modernization and open-net salmon farming. Also, a non-profit organization representing more than 3,500 fire departments across Canada returns to the registry for the first time in 12 years.

K+S Potash Canada has joined the registry for the first time to engage with officials on potential financial support for decarbonization, clean technology, transportation and infrastructure opportunities and investments. The corporation is represented by two Global Public Affairs consultants: Catherine Lansley and Ted Gruetzner

Electricity distribution company Toronto Hydro Electric System Limited is also joining the registry for the first time, and will be represented by its president and CEO Anthony Haines. It seeks discussions with the federal government on the modernisation of the electric grid and climate action, according to its registry file.

In new registrations, Greg MacEachern joined the registry as an independent consultant to represent Cermaq Canada Ltd. MacEachern’s registry file states that he will seek to discuss and consult on legislation related to the federal government’s transition from open-net salmon aquaculture in British Columbia.

This is MacEachern’s first registration since leaving Proof Strategies. Although he has registered as an independent consultant, MacEachern was recently named as principal and founder of Kan Strategies in a July 6 article posted to the St. Francis Xavier University website.
